Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3
We’re 4 weeks into the LOTR Readalong for Fellowship of the Ring. This week we started “book 2″ of the Fellowship, where Frodo has arrived at Rivendell.
1. ‘The Council of Elrond’ is such a big chapter, both in terms of length and subject matter. As the reader it felt like a lot to remember and keep in mind so I can only imagine how Frodo feels about it. Do you think hearing all these tales helps him to step forward and announce that he will take the ring to the Cracks of Doom or would he have offered regardless?
2. Gandalf speaks in favour of Merry and Pippin travelling with the other seven Companions by saying, “I think, Elrond, that in this matter it would be well to trust rather to their friendship than to great wisdom”. Do you agree with him?
3. Saruman claims that they (the Wise ones) should join in with this new rising Power and use the ring. Gandalf disagrees but he does not wish to be the sole caretaker of the ring and see it destroyed as the power of the ring combined with his wisdom may corrupt him. On the other hand, the ring cannot go to someone like Tom Bombadil who is unaffected by its power and therefore can neither alter it or destroy it. Do you think Frodo will be able to resist the temptation and lure of the ring’s power?
